HA'IKUUMAUMA (HAWAIIAN VOYAGING CANOE) The Hawaiian Dictionary defines "Ha'ikuumauma" as "a call to help lift a canoe together to be put into the ocean." This drawing of a voyaging canoe defines the amount of effort that was involved in building such a craft. According to Dennis Chun, Hawaiian Studies Teacher at KCC, it took a village to build a canoe. The Hawaiian voyaging canoe may well be the most versatile and sea-worthy craft ever built by any culture in any time. |
